The Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies (JJMDC) will form a strategic partnership with Microsoft to further enhance and broaden its digital surgery ecosystem.

Under the partnership, Microsoft will serve as the preferred Cloud provider for JJMDC’s digital surgery solutions.

The collaboration with Microsoft will also allow JJMDC to expand its digital surgery platform and Internet of Things (IoT) device connectivity. 

With a focus on advancing skills, enhancing workflows and improving surgical decision making, JJMDC will leverage the Microsoft Cloud technologies, including Azure, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, as well as Dynamics 365 and Microsoft 365 to accelerate its innovations.

Johnson & Johnson medical devices group CIO and global vice-president Larry Jones said: “Collaborating with Microsoft will help take our digital approach to the next level as we create a best-in-class, unified platform across our innovative surgical technologies.

“It brings together our collective expertise and is an exciting step towards creating a connected patient journey across the entire care continuum, before, during and after a procedure.”

As part of the collaboration, the companies will work together to improve patient outcomes with AI, machine learning and data insights.

The partnership will also utilise Azure IoT and Edge Computing technologies to scale-up JJMDC device connectivity, insights and intelligence.

Furthermore, by leveraging Azure capabilities and services, the companies will seek to accelerate digital innovation pace and transformation across the digital surgery ecosystem of JJMDC.

JJMDC medical affairs, clinical affairs and pre-clinical research global head and office of digital innovation leader Peter Schulam said: “We’re excited to collaborate with Microsoft on this important work as we continue to expand our digital surgery assets and capabilities, develop innovative and advanced instrumentation, and make a meaningful clinical difference for customers and patients.”

Last February, Activ Surgical was named the newest member of the Microsoft for Startups programme, through which the company got exclusive access to Microsoft’s technologies, including Azure.
