Three More Schools-In-Hospitals To Be Operational By Year End

Three more Schools-in-Hospitals (SDH) are being set up in Negri Sembilan, Sabah and Sarawak, says Deputy Prime Minister

Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, in launching Phase 2 and 3 of the SDH initiative at the Selayang Hospital today, said the SDH in the three states were expected to be fully operational before the year end.

Phase 2 sees SDH being operational at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru, Temerloh’s Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Medical Centre in Cheras, and Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan.

“Phase 3 would see SDH being operational at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar, Johor, University Malaya’s Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur and Selayang Hospital,” he said in his speech at the launch of the SDH initiative today.

He said this was one of the initiatives under the ministry’s Malaysian Education Development Plan 2013-2025 and in line with Unesco’s “Education for All”.

Some 40,568 children, from July 2011 to March 2014, have benefited from the 10 SDHs set up through the ministry’s collaboration with the Health Ministry to provide education for children hospitalised because of various ailments.

“We are committed to providing education to every child and would work hard to ensure education is provided to them regardless of their health situation.”

Muhyiddin added that some 80 teachers, along with 18 Student Management Assistants, had been roped in to assist in the 10 SDHs.

He added that the ministry had  selected the Teachers Education Institute Malaysia Kota Baru campus (IPGM) as a centre of learning to provide courses pertaining to this initiative.

“This will allow the ministry to provide comprehensive training for teachers, ranging from pre-service to service, within the SDH itself.”

Phase 1 of the initiative was launched on July 26, 2011.
