Dexcom received FDA approval for Dexcom G4 PLATINUM Professional CGM, the first real-time continuous glucose monitor to be used by physicians for evaluating their patients’ blood sugar levels for up to seven days. It’s essentially the G4 PLATINUM, but to be owned and maintained by the physician’s office. The doctor can prescribe a week long evaluation to both understand the patient’s pathophysiology and for the patient to better understand how his/her lifestyle can influence glucose levels.

The patient is still required to perform two manual glucose readings daily to make sure the device remains calibrated and continues to provide readings every five minutes. The device displays how the readings are trending and llarms can be setup to warn the wearer whenever readings fall out of a predetermined safe range.
