Penumbra, an Alameda, California firm, will be releasing its new POD vascular embolization device next week at the Society of Interventional Radiology’s annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia The POD (Peripheral Occlusion Device) is delivered via a high-flow microcatheter and features a unique anchoring system to help make sure it’s placed accurately within the vessel. Once at the site to be occluded, the soft coiling segment is packed tightly to create a solid leak-proof plug. The detachment of the implant happens immediately upon deployment allowing the catheter to be safely retreated.

“POD is a significant advancement for vascular embolization,” said Adam Elsesser, chairman and chief executive officer of Penumbra. “Its unique design enables POD to anchor to the vessel wall, enabling interventionalists to increase accuracy and packing density during embolization procedures. Increased packing density helps ensure more effective embolization.”

The company will also be presenting clinical data on a couple other devices, including the Ruby peripheral embolization coil and the Indigo thromboembolectomy system.
