WHILL Type-a, An Innovative Mobility Device Raising Funds On Kickstarter

Last year we wrote about a new mobility device (don’t call it a wheelchair!) that was designed to help people get around their homes and outdoors with greater ease and in a dashing style. The WHILL, developed in Tokyo, Japan, has innovative front wheels made up of smaller individual wheels that allow for a 28″ turning radius. The same wheels, coupled with the power provided by the rear axle, permit the device to travel over rough surfaces, including gravel and snow.

To speed the commercialization of the WHILL, the developers just started a Kickstarter campaign to develop custom smartphone software for the device. They hope this will provide interesting functionality, including being able to control the WHILL remotely, help find charging stations, and send out hardware diagnostic reports back to the manufacturer.
