AliveCor’s AliveECG Heart Monitor Now Detects Atrial Fibrillation Inside Smartphone App

AliveCor, makers of the popular AliveCor Heart Monitor, a one lead ECG that runs on smartphones, has received FDA clearance for an automatic algorithm that can detect atrial fibrillation.

The automated analysis process, as the algorithm is called, will be integrated into the AliveECG app and made available next month. The hope is that every reading will automatically be analyzed for AFib, giving patients immediate notice and making the chart available to their cardiologists for closer review. Because AFib strikes its sufferers at random times, it can be difficult to detect it in a clinical setting. Having a device on hand that can help identify it at any time should help with diagnosis and eventual treatment of the condition.

The company is planning on developing other algorithms that can spot different cardiac conditions, hopefully expanding the capabilities of the AliveCor system and saving lives in the process.
