The Importance of an Optimal Cytological Biopsy Technique

The use of Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy for diagnosis in oncology has been increased steadily since the 1960's. Attempts at increasing the quality of this method have received a great deal of attention in cytological literature.

Although it seems that the biopsy-technique itself is often omitted from consideration, a standard technique has never been developed. This fact is even more remarkable when we realise that the low sensitivity of aspiration cytology is to a large degree caused by sampling error.

An examination of current biopsy techniques indicates that they are fundamentally inaccurate and ineffective.

Improvement and standardisation of the biopsy-technique is desirable, and we are now introducing the Cytec® instrument, specially developed for cytological biopsy.

The Cytec® instrument has been developed with the aim of taking cell material in an effective way, because:

a) The distance between suspicious lesion and manipulating hand is as short as possible.
b) The operator handles the instrument in a pen-grip and therefore he/she is able to insert the needle into the tissue accurately.
c) There is no force necessary to create vacuum or to neutralize the vacuum.
d) During the whole procedure one hand is available to fix the tumour.

It has been proven from the human medical science that a cytological diagnosis scores at a high percentage, only when the way of taking cell material can be executed by means of an instrument with a high degree of sensitivity.

Because of the reason that only relatively a few experienced operators (pathologists) are able to score a high percentage of good quality samples, the need existed to improve the method of cell-sampling. The punction technique itself made the cytological way of diagnosis in discredit in the past, and in scientific literature the question of the reliability of cytological diagnosis was a hot item. More than 15 years ago, in human medicine, the use of a needle and syringe was not accepted anymore.

The new developed instrument Cytec® meets the demand of the improved puncture technique, and the concept of the Cytec® instruments has increased the accessibility towards any authorized person to take cell sampling in a proper way.
