Voxiva (Washington D.C.), a mobile health and wellness company, has launched an iOS and Android mobile app called Care4life to help patients with Type 2 diabetes better manage their disease. The app was developed in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association and provides patients with structured education regarding their condition and offers ongoing lifestyle improvement tips with the end goal of empowering patients to take control of their condition. Users routinely input their weight, blood glucose readings, and blood pressure results to build a comprehensive log of their health status within the app. Using the entered information, the app motivates patients to attain and maintain a healthy weight by providing nutrition suggestions and setting exercise goals. The app helps to track and monitor low blood glucose levels by providing warnings and alerts to the patient through personalized messages when there is a potential for hypoglycemia to occur, such as when a patient has a blood glucose level below 70 before a meal. Care4life helps improve medication adherence by requiring the patient to respond to medication intake questions, and also helps to improve appointment attendance by sending reminders to the patient about upcoming clinical appointments. Patients can view their health history through dashboards on the app at any time, and can also share the data from the app via email or printed reports with their caregivers. The patients’ data from the app can also be integrated with electronic health records and case management systems.

Voxiva has studied the impact of the Care4life program on diabetes patients and found that 85% of the patients in the study showed improved knowledge of diabetes, as well as improved medication adherence and appointment attendance. The study also showed that 86% of the patients found the app useful in setting exercise and health goals, and working towards those milestones. Finally, 96% of the patients studied mentioned that they would recommend the app to other diabetes patients.
