Bioceptive, a New Orleans-based firm, won FDA clearance to introduce its new suction cervical retractor to U.S. gynocologists. Unlike cervical tenaculum forceps, the device uses suction to tug at the cervix, allowing various instruments to slip in.

The device can be used to perform intrauterine device insertions, endometrial biopsies, as various fertility procedures. Though the retractor can work with devices produced by other manufacturers, Bioceptive is working on its own tools that will naturally work in conjunction with the new retractor to simply procedures.

“Bioceptive’s suction tenaculum is a truly novel gynecologic instrument that permits cervical traction without tissue penetration. This device coupled with Bioceptive’s IUD inserter has the potential to revolutionize IUD insertion by dramatically simplifying the process,” said David Turok, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Utah, who worked with Bioceptive on the new retractor.
