Roche has announced that it’s now making available in the U.S. its ACCU-CHEK Aviva Expert blood glucose meter. This is the first glucometer that also provides insulin dosage calculation that was approved by the FDA. This is pretty important since at least one study showed that manually calculated bolus doses are usually incorrect and people end up injecting either too much or too little insulin, potentially leading to serious complications. With the Aviva Expert, the calculation is done automatically, hopefully leading to improved management of diabetes and to less anxiety about hypoglycemia because the math was off. According to Roche, a survey of people that had a chance to use the device on a daily basis showed that, “79 percent reported increased confidence with insulin dose calculation, and 52 percent reported a reduced fear of hypoglycemia.”

The system is available only by prescription to diabetics trained in handling multiple daily injections.
