The multidisciplinary OPMI VARIO 700 surgical microscope is a flexible and cost-conscious solution for hospitals. OPMI VARIO 700 offers outstanding optics, excellent ease of use and a future-oriented, integrated design. These features enable it to assist both the surgeon and the OR staff in achieving enhanced treatment outcomes.

Carl Zeiss Meditec is presenting the innovative OPMI® VARIO 700 surgical microscope to an international public for the first time at the EuroSpine 2010 in Vienna/Austria. The system enables optimal treatment outcomes thanks to high quality optics and maximum freedom of movement for the surgeon. The use of leading edge technologies makes workflows in the OR more efficient and straightforward. This allows the OR team to concentrate on what is essential — the patient. OPMI VARIO 700 is a multidisciplinary system that can be specially configured for the respective discipline.
“The OPMI VARIO 700 has been developed in close dialog with surgeons from various disciplines,” explains Dr. Ludwin Monz, President and CEO of Carl Zeiss Meditec AG. “With the new surgical microscope we are further expanding our leading position in the field of microsurgery,” Dr. Monz continues.
Back pain is a very widespread complaint and the resulting number of operations is continuing to rise. OPMI VARIO 700 permits the procedure to be performed microsurgically and therefore more gently for the patient.
Prof. Dr. Richard Assaker, Neurosurgical Clinic, Hôpital Roger Salengro, Lille/France was actively involved in the system's development. “I used OPMI VARIO 700 in a thoracic surgery and it was perfect. Especially the small microscope head allowed a long working distance.” The large distance between the microscope and the patient permits ergonomically correct surgery, even with long surgical instruments in narrow, deep-lying work channels.
OPMI VARIO 700 can be flexibly configured and is suitable for multidisciplinary use. Therefore, OPMI VARIO 700 is equally ideal for spine, ENT, plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as for neurosurgery. Upgrading with new technologies is possible at any time depending on requirements.
Key benefits of OPMI VARIO 700
OPMI VARIO 700 combines modern technologies with excellent user-friendliness, therefore benefiting not only the surgeon but also the entire OR team.
More precision for better treatment outcomes
You can only treat what you can see. Therefore, special importance has once again been attached to providing high image quality, detail resolution and color fidelity. The OR team can also follow the entire course of surgery in brilliant video quality. In OPMI VARIO 700 the whole video chain — from the high-definition (HD) camera and the digital display right up to the video recording system — is integrated.
Ease of use for the OR team
OPMI VARIO 700 has been designed to make the work of the OR team simpler and faster. The previous time-consuming procedure required to balance the microscope is now performed by the AutoBalance™ function at the push of a button. The attachment of sterile drapes is facilitated by the AutoDrape® function, with which the air is evacuated out of the drape. In addition, integrated cable routing allows easy cleaning and disinfection of the system.
More efficient workflows and enhanced ergonomic correctness for the surgeon
For surgeons, it is not only the availability of state-of-the-art technologies that is decisive, but also the capability of operating them in the easiest way possible. With the programmable handgrips and the wireless foot control panel of OPMI VARIO 700 surgeons can operate all key functions of the microscope comfortably and conveniently. User profiles and settings can be made and saved for each individual user via the touchscreen. This means OPMI VARIO 700 is always configured and ready for use for each surgeon.
The OPMI VARIO 700 system has already received the International Red Dot Design Award in 2010.
