Thursday 16th October 2014: Diabetes is a major health problem worldwide, more so in developing countries. In Malaysia, the rate of diabetes has increased 230% within 25 years from 6.3% in 1986 to 20.8% in 2011, with an estimated 2.5 million Malaysia aged 30 years and above living with diabetes. Worst still, many of the sufferers do not know that they have the disease while others are burdened by serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputation and blindness that are associated with poor-managed diabetes.
To help address these problems, the National Diabetes Institute (NADI) of Malaysia, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the prevention and optimal care of people with diabetes will be conducting its annual 13th Continuing Professional Development "Diabetes Asia 2014" Conference from 16th to 19th October 2014 at the Sunway Convention Centre.
Distinguished international experts in diabetes including Professor Andrew Morris from United Kingdom, Professor Donald Chisholm (Australia), Professor Eberhard Standl (Germany), Professor John Miles (USA) and others Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) from China, Hong Kong, Philippines and Turkey will deliver lectures and share expertise and experience to complement local specialists.
Concurrent plenary and symposium sessions will cover topics on recent advances and current management of diabetes and related conditions such as use of newer drugs both oral and injectable and surgery for the treatment of diabetes, alternative and complementary therapies, recent clinical trials and the Joint ESC/EASD Guildlines, managing diabetes during this pregnancy and those with heart disease or kidney failure. The effect of diabetes on the liver, brain, eyes, oral health and quality of life will also be discussed.
