China is the largest manufacturing, exporting and OEM country on wheelchair, walking aids, walking stick and orthopedic in the world.

By 2011, there are 83.7 million disabled in China, among them 24.6 million need artificial limbs or mobility aids.

By 2011, the aged population over 60 amounted to 179 million. Among which 18.9 million are over the age of 85.

There are 33 million of the aged population loss of self-care ability completely, 11.68 million among them can be provided with Chinese government subsidy up to 100%.

By 2010, China has about 40 thousand nursing homes with a total of around 3.17 million beds. The estimated number of nursing homes and nursing home beds would add more 20 thousand and 3.4 million over the next 5 years.

The total domestic trade value is about USD 19.3 billion in China, and over 90% of the premium products were imported from abroad which accounted for an annual value of USD 4 billion. Estimates predict that the demand of the domestic market will reach 45.2 billion and will grow continuously.

The living standards of the disabled in China has been greatly improved, in particular, the coverage of income, social security, community services and rehabilitation services, and the disabled’s well-off level has reached 57.4%.——“Monitoring Report of National Disability Status and the Well-off Process 2010”

Currently , the elderly over the age of 60 has reached 177 million in China, accounting for 13.26% of the total population. It’s up by 2.39 percentage points compared with 2000 census and the aging process is accelerating.——Data Bulletin of Sixth National Population Census

As an important part of China Disabled people’s Federation’s overall layout in the development of assistive devices , Guangzhou will set up "South China Resource Center of Technical Aids for Disabled People" , which is centered by the Pearl River Delta and radiation throughout the southern region before 2015, to form a set of an integrated base including information promotion, research and development, staff training and exhibitions. During the preparatory phase, it needs to develop a large number of aids devices and have them in stock.

Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou, Zhongshan, Foshan, as barrier-free cities , included in the national list, of which Guangzhou is the national model city of barrier-free facilities appointed by the State Council, and it will expand coverage in information accessibility , transportation accessibility, home accessibility and barrier-free facilities.
