Strong Surge in Malaysia’s Medical Technology Industry Provides Impetus For New Trade Show
Malaysia’s strategic location and friendly investment laws have made it a new target for the medical industry, keen to establish manufacturing bases to serve rising national demand as well as ASEAN’s growing and increasingly wealthy populations.
According to the Association of Malaysian Medical Industries, the consumption of medical devices in the country is expected to grow to USD877 million this year, increasing further to USD956 million in 2011 and USD1.7 billion in 2012.
Given this promising scenario, Asia Medical 2011, the Asia International Medical Supplies. Equipment and Technology exhibition and conference is timely and will run from 11-13 October next year at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, with the full backing of the Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH).
Malaysia currently imports 85% of its medical equipment and demand for equipment and pharmaceuticals are forecast to grow by 15% per year. Government support under the current 5 Year Economic Development Plan and a surge in demand for private healthcare are also key drivers of growth. Furthermore the government has now approved licences for 45 new private hospitals, raising the number of private beds to 15,178. The public sector accounts for a further 39,000 beds. However, there are 9000 doctors in the private sector versus 13,500 in the public sector.
Malaysia is already the world’s leading supplier of medical gloves and catheters, supplying 80% of catheters and 60% of rubber gloves from 179 manufacturing companies.
At Asia Medical 2011, exhibitors from across the globe will display a full range of products and technology including dental equipment, diagnostics, electromedical devices, laboratory equipment, medical consumables, ophthalmic supplies, pharmaceutical supplies and medical furniture.
