Pupils excited to take part in Philips’ global initiative

SELANGOR, July 2, 2013: It was an exciting day for pupils at SK Damansara Jaya 2 here this morning when Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) kicked off its national-level SimplyHealthy@Schools 2013 program at the school.

Led by volunteers from the company, the 106 pupils, aged between eight and 12, excitedly took part in the global initiative which serves to empower them with the value of nutrition and healthy living.

Philips Group of Companies Malaysia Chairman and CEO, Naeem Shahab Khan said the Netherlands-based company had initiated the program in 2009, and it has since been expanded to over 50 countries as of 2012.

“Philips provides innovative solutions that address major trends affecting the world, for example the demand for affordable healthcare, the need for greater energy efficiency, and the desire for personal well-being.

“Now, we are bringing our solutions to schools too by teaching pupils about nutrition so they can live healthy, fulfilled lives by keeping fit and eating a balanced diet,” he said.

Naeem said cultivating healthy eating habits must start from childhood. Hence, the global health and well-being company had developed a special nutrition module for children that highlight the importance of a balanced breakfast.

The module introduced the pupils to four Healthy Heroes – Anand, Ai Ling, Bakri and Farah – who practice healthy living, not just in terms of eating right but living in a sustainable environment too.

Year 5 pupil, Anis Suhaila Mohd Tawfiq, 11, said she learned much during the program. “From our lessons, we know that proper nutrition is important for a healthy body. But the SimplyHealthy@Schools program showed us the importance of eating different coloured fruits and vegetables to get the benefits of balanced nutrition,” she said.

Her classmate, Danielle Daniel, also 11, said she was excited when introduced to the Healthy Heroes characters. “They are a different kind of superheroes. I like Bakri the best as he is always bouncing with vitamin B because of all the green vegetables he eats,” she said.

Headmistress Khadijah Udin thanked Philips for including the school in its program. “My pupils are excited when visitors come and impart an education outside of a classroom setting. It’s a welcome change and good for them too.”

She also thanked the company for relamping classrooms at the school. “Now some of our classrooms have brighter lights, and what’s more they are energy saving too. This gives us an opportunity to teach our pupils about sustainable, energy saving solutions that saves on electricity bill and protects our planet too,” she said.
