Water Birth : PHKL’s alternative child birth method makes waves in Malaysia

A wave of trend to going “back-to-basics” and for choosing au naturel has ushered in a number of practices that have historical linkages and are more akin to human nature and traditions. Practices such as child birth in water are making a come back and not-surprisingly, are getting a strong following.

Water birth is not a new concept. Women from across the globe have the choice to deliver in water – from the sea to saunas to pools, within or outside a medical setting.

In Malaysia, Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL) has pioneered in setting up a Water Birth facility in Klang Valley to provide a natural alternative for child delivery; and had its first ever delivery through this method, in 2009.

Recently, PHKL has launched its brand new and upgraded Water Birth facility.

The state of the art facility is equipped with modern amenities to include rain shower, soul music and other latest medical equipment for pregnant women, to ensure complete comfort and convenience during the birthing process.

PHKL’s consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr Choong Kuo Hsiang, who has successfully delivered nearly 100 babies via the water birth technique, said, “I always believe that a woman should have a natural, active birth, whereby they have some control of what they are doing. This includes the ability to move around in labour and to deliver in an upright position of positions that are comfortable to them. Water Birth offers such flexibility. I am happy to see that more and more Malaysian couples are acknowledging the advantages of Water Birth as an alternative child delivery procedure.”

According to PHKL, its efforts have always been towards continually improving its overall healthcare systems. The new Water Birth facility is a marked improvement from the first ever -water birth facility at the hospital., which was a rubber pool placed in a normal ward.

The new facility has a ceramic pool, which functions like a Jacuzzi bathtub; and a handheld and rain shower, giving additional comfort to the mother in labour.

The delivery suite is also furnished with comfortable sofas and a mural of choice of sea scape and waterfall view to provide extra relaxing experience to the mother.

“We continue our tireless journey and remain focused on delivering our brand promise – caring from the heart. The introduction of the Water Birth procedure and its continuous development is a testimony to our commitment to “care for our patients and to offer them alternative medical solutions for their health and good life”, said En. Anwar Anis, CEO of PHKL.
