UKM MEDICAL CENTER INTRODUCES 3D VASCULAR TECHNOLOGY FROM PHILIPS TO MALAYSIA

Interventional Neuroradiologists use Philips interventional angiographic lab to visualize and treat neurovascular problems of the brain and spinal cord with greater details, accuracy and lower risk to patients.

Cheras, Selangor –In an effort to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of stroke among Malaysian residents, l Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) today announced it will utilize new, state-of-the-art medical technology that enables physicians to capture and view detailed 3D images through the use of an innovative angiographic X-ray lab. According to the Ministry of Health more than 50,000 people suffered from stroke in Malaysia last year.

UKMMC will now be able to conduct minimally invasive procedures on the new system to treat a wide range of clinical problems including stroke, carotid artery disease, and other vascular disorders. These catheter-based procedures are designed to reduce some of the risks and recovery time found in traditional surgical approaches. The many benefits of catheter-based interventions include shorter hospital stay, reduced recovery time without the pain of a large incision, and less visible surgical scarring.

UKMMC has recently installed the new Allura Xper FD20/10 interventional lab from Philips. This fully digital system enables physicians to capture and view detailed 3D images of a patient’s vascular structure, thereby facilitating faster and more accurate diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease. Equally important, the Allura system significantly reduces the radiation dosage a patient is exposed to during the actual procedures compared to any other system available today.

UKMMC has also purchased a Philips “biplane” configuration system that will allow physicians to view anatomy in two planes simultaneously – a crucial technique for the complex brain procedures performed at the facility.

“Both our patients and clinicians will benefit from the image accuracy and excellent applications of this new X-ray system particularly to diagnose and treat neurovascular diseases,” explained Associate Prof. Dr. A. Sobri Muda at UKMMC. “It will allow complex lesions to be managed more effectively using the new angiography system. Furthermore, we can complete diagnostic and therapeutic procedures faster, and that means the patient is off the table and on their way to recovery. It also means less radiation exposure for the patient.”

The multi-functional system can aid in the diagnosis and treatment of a range of patient conditions and can also be used for procedures such as diagnostic catheterizations, stenting, balloon angioplasty, vertebroplasty, and embolizations. UKMMC will be able to further  actively perform these types of procedures with the acquisition of the new angiography system.

UKMMC  has partnered with Philips Healthcare to provide this enhanced technology to its patients. “Interventional X-ray technology is a vital component in the future of medicine,” said Lee Weng Seong, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Philips Group of Companies in Malaysia. “The Philips Allura brings a new level of quality and detail to HUKM images allowing physicians to offer patients safe and effective alternatives to surgery,” added Lee.

“For doctors and patients who understand that the latest technology can improve outcomes, the system represents what they have been looking for: the very latest technology that provides exceptional image quality, professing accuracy and clarity in the most patient-friendly environment. It is of tremendous treatment benefit to the community,” added Mr. Weng Seong.

UKMMC is pleased to be able to offer this important improvement in healthcare to its patients. UKMMC has been providing quality healthcare services to Malaysians since 1970’s. Patient referrals may be made by calling +603-91455639 or Fax at +603-91737824
