In lieu of the mandatory standards set by the Malaysian Government for medical practitioners, the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) bids for a review – or in worse case scenarios, cancellation- of the accreditation of foreign medical colleges that fall short of compliance to said standards.
Dr N.K.S Tharmaseelan , MMA President says that the Education Ministry had set a minimum of 5 B4s for entry to any medical college, locally and overseas.
He cited a survey by the Ministry of Health (MOH) that indicated the poor performance of graduates from some universities, which admit students who lack the required qualifications.
He also says that these medical colleges were, surprisingly, recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), and hence, their graduates are entitled to be given jobs as per the provision of the Medical Act, notwithstanding the absence of the 5 B4s requirements.
Low grades are no longer a specific qualifying basis, he hints, adding that some colleges put premium on profits rather than quality (of the graduates). This will consequently bring havoc to the healthcare system, he says.
Tharmaseelan proposes that the MMC should withdraw the accreditation (of non-compliant schools) immediately, and that the Council should be provided with adequate funds and facilities to be able to conduct three yearly reviews of the accreditation of the foreign universities.
