KUALA LUMPUR, 27 February 2014 – As we celebrate the emerging empowerment of women in today’s society, we should also take the time to create awareness on potential health risk they may face. Among the many misconceptions is that heart disease is often a male issue. In fact heart disease is the number one killer of women in Malaysia and is two and a half times more common than dying from all cancers combined, according to the National Heart Association of Malaysia.
As the saying goes, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, proving the point that women carry a heavy burden and in the process develops innumerable courage and higher threshold to pain. This higher pain threshold camouflages serious symptoms or pain as a mild nuisance, leading to later diagnosis and treatment and poorer outcomes amongst women with heart disease.
To create awareness of heart disease among women and as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) effort, Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed) is launching the ‘Give A Heart’ campaign specially for the womenfolk. This campaign aims to highlight the threat of heart disease amongst women, a growing trend that remains under the radar compared to other higher profile 'female diseases' such as breast cancer.
Through the ‘Give A Heart’ campaign, SunMed will be providing free CT Coronary Angiograms for disadvantaged women who need it between June to December 2014. The hospital will raise funds for the campaign by donating a portion of the fee from all CT scans done at the hospital to the Give A Heart campaign. Patients who wish to apply for the Give A Heart fund will need to be referred by a panel of Cardiologists at SunMed and their application is subject to approval by the Give A Heart committee. Each disbursement will be capped at RM 3,000 per patient.
The Give A Heart campaign is in collaboration with Siemens Malaysia. SunMed is the first private hospital to install the Siemens Somatom CT Scanner with Stellar Detector. Getting equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology is part of SunMed’s continuous expansion plan to serve our patients better. Reflecting our 15th anniversary tagline, "Committed to You", SunMed strongly believes in preparing ourselves to meet the high expectations of our patients.
According to the CEO of SunMed, Madam Tan Suet Guan, the Give A Heart campaign is part of our 15th Anniversary celebration this year. "SunMed’s newly installed Siemens Flash Speed Dual Source CT Scanner with Stellar Detector is able to meet our patients’ needs as it allows for faster scanning time, has lower dose of radiation, pinpoints the location of a tumour, infection or blood clot and will be able to detect and monitor diseases and conditions such as heart disease, cancer, lung nodules and liver masses. With this Give a Heart campaign, women who need a CT Coronary Angiogram can benefit from this state-of-the-art machine without increasing their financial burden. And the public too can contribute by choosing to have their CT scans done at SunMed since a small fee will be donated to the campaign fund for every CT scan done at SunMed between January to June 2014" said Madam Tan.
