Earth-breaking Soon For Palliative Care Centre

KUCHING: The Kuching Life Care Society will hold an earth-breaking ceremony for its Palliative Care Centre at Desa Wira, Batu Kawa soon.

Situated on one acre of state land, the centre will support the seriously ill and their families.

“The land was approved by the Land and Survey Department in May 2014. Our target fund is RM6 million and we have raised RM2 million,” said founder and chairman Hung Sung Huo when contacted yesterday.

“We are organising a food fair on Sept 28 to raise RM200,000. We need stalls and the sale of coupons is on-going.” The food fair would be held at Dewan Masyarakat.

The palliative centre is designed to accommodate up to 78 terminally ill patients, with services such as place of treatment, terminal sedation and use of medication to treat symptoms. It will consist of 34 rooms – reception office, general office, meeting room, caretaker’s room, living room, dining room, common kitchen, multipurpose room, library as well as two consultation and treatment rooms.

Palliative care involves specialised medical care focusing on providing patients with relief from their symptoms, pain, and the stress of a serious illness.

It is provided by a team of doctors, nurses and other specialists who work together with a patient’s other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. Appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness, it can be provided along with curative treatment.
