Collaboration Gives University Access To Medical ExpertiseKUCHING: Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) and University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for staff, expertise and services exchange programmes.

The collaboration is between Unimas’s Medicine and Health Sciences Faculty and the private hospital, which will be able to provide access to its full medical, radiological and laboratory services.

“The signing of the understanding marks an important milestone for both parties to work more closely toward the pursuit of excellence of medicine,” said a statement from Unimas.

The scope of the collaboration includes knowledge and expertise sharing between the two.

As Unimas plans to build its own teaching hospital, strong ties with an experienced team of medical experts in BMC would help in the design, management and procurement network for the proposed hospital.”

Representing Unimas at the signing here yesterday was vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suadi, while BMC was represented by managing director Dr Peter Tang Ing Bing and medical director Dr John Chew.

“Unimas has been proposing the building of our own University Hospital for many years now. The university hospital is crucial for the development of learning and training of young doctors and nurses. It will become a classroom for physicians, nurses, and other health professionals, where learning and research is merged to enable Sarawak to have the best healthcare training programme,” said Kadim.

BMC is a newly established 100-bed, tertiary-level private medical centre.

It opened in September last year. Meanwhile, Unimas is the only university in Sarawak which has a medical faculty.
