It was an astonishing event at the 2ndHong Kong International Medical Devices and Supplies Fair (HKTDC 2010) which was being held on 3 – 5 November 2010. The event started on 3rdNovember, Wednesday with exhibitors’ registration and preparation for the event and Infinity 21 (M) Sdn Bhd took part in this meaningful event as there is a chance to witness more professional medical device offering from all around the world for both the household consumer market and the institutional market.

Co-organised by the Hong Kong Medical and Healthcare Device Industries Association with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the fair is scheduled to take place during 3 – 5 November 2010 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre with the support of the Centre for Innovation and Technology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Mould and Die Technology Association.

According to the World Health Organisation, the total global expenditure for health is now around US$4.7 trillion a year, and the health expenditure as a percentage of GDP has been increasing among all major economies, including the Chinese mainland. The Chinese central government’s RMB 850 billion (US$124 billion) nationwide medical-care system reform plan, which was announced last year, further adds to the promising market outlook in the region.

Hong Kong has long been the sourcing hub of choice – conveniently located at the heart of Asia and the gateway to the Chinese mainland, with a comprehensive transportation network and a trusted business environment. Further backed by the rich OEM experience and advancements in product design and development of its local medical and healthcare device industry, the Hong Kong International Medical Devices and Supplies Fair is the right platform for worldwide exhibitors and buyers to capitalise on business opportunities in the Asian markets, while companies in the region can establish business connections with international entrepreneurs.

The fair’s highlight zone is the Tech Exchange, which facilitates technology commercialisation and the future development of the medical devices industry. Tertiary institutions will be there to present their R&D projects to manufacturers and entrepreneurs, thereby maximising the business potential of their scientific findings.

The Medical Supplies and Disposables Zone addresses the growing needs of medical supplies in the hospital and home-based long-term care sectors, showcasing products such as gloves, incontinence & stoma aids, and masks, plus many other related items for which demand is increasing every year.

Debuting this year is the Laboratory Equipment Zone, which features different types of testing equipment. This is a future high-growth area in Hong Kong, with testing and certification now one of the six pillar industries promoted by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, that is simultaneously becoming increasingly important in other markets.

Other main product categories include:

  • Building Technology and Hospital Furniture
  • Hospital Equipment
  • Household Medical Products
  • Manufacturing and Design Solutions
  • Rehabilitation and Elderly Care

The fair also presents great opportunities for networking and information exchange. A networking reception will be organized for industry insiders from all around the world to expand their business networks through face-to-face meetings. Seminars on regulatory updates and market trends will also be organised to equip exhibitors and visitors with the latest information. The HKTDC is also working with the Hong Kong Doctors’ Union to co-organise a course on continuing medical education.

The HKTDC is also sponsoring the Biomedical Engineering International Conference (BME2010 Hong Kong), which will have different sessions taking place concurrently with the fair. Organised biennially, the BME conference series has been a converging point of biomedical professionals of different nationalities, disciplines, and research foci since 1992. BME 2010 Hong Kong will be comprised of scientific presentations, workshops, and a technical visit, serving as an exchange platform for biomedical engineers, researchers, regulators, industrialists, and healthcare professionals alike.

We, at Infinity 21 hope to keep the readers updated with the events held in order to serve the medical players better.
